I made this photo during Carnival in the Dominican Republic. I was 19 years old and taking time off from college to photograph for a book about baseball.

On my way to the main baseball stadium in Santo Domingo one evening I walked past a dancing troupe, and this girl was looking in my direction. I did a quick light measurement, bent at the knees, focused, and snapped the photo.

It wasn't until I saw the developed film a couple of months later that I realized that it had turned out even better than I recalled. Photography is full of surprises, some good and some bad. Of all the photos I have taken this remains one of my favorites.
